Sharjah National Oil Corporation & Emerge Inaugurate First Utility-Scale Solar Plant in Sharjah

  • 60MWp plant sets record as Emirate of Sharjah’s first utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) facility
  • It is one of the world’s first large-scale oil & gas processing facilities to meet its own electrical needs—and export surplus power—using on-site solar generation
  • The plant will offset 66,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually – equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 13,780 homes
  • It will power SNOC’s operations while exporting surplus electricity to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) during the day

Sharjah, UAE – June 25, 2025: Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC), the oil and gas industry executive arm of the Emirate, and Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and the EDF Group, achieved a significant landmark today with the inauguration of Sharjah’s first utility-scale solar photovoltaic(PV) plant, “Sana”. It is also one of the world’s first large-scale oil and gas processing facilities to meet its own electrical needs—and export surplus power—using on-site solar generation.

The ceremony was witnessed by H.H. Sultan bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of SNOC, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed Ahmad Al Qasimi, Vice President of SNOC, H.E. Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEWA, Khamis Al Mazrouei, CEO of SNOC, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, Luc Koechlin, CEO of EDF Middle East and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge.

Located in SNOC’s Sajaa Gas Plant, the 60MWp ground-mounted solar PV plant will generate enough clean energy to offset 66,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually – equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 13,780 homes. This renewable energy source will power SNOC’s operations while exporting surplus electricity to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) during the day. In return, SEWA will supply the necessary electricity for SNOC’s operations at night.

H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of SNOC, said: “The launch of the first utility-scale Solar PV project in Sharjah, in collaboration with Emerge, marks a transformative milestone in our journey towards sustainable energy. As part of the newly established Sharjah Energy Council’s mission to strategically shape the future of energy and water in the emirate, this project reinforces Sharjah’s commitment to environmental stewardship while strengthening our energy spectrum with clean, renewable resources. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in shaping a greener, more sustainable future for our Emirate and beyond.”

SNOC’s Chief Executive Officer, Khamis Al Mazrouei, said: “The commissioning of ‘Sana’, SNOC’s first 60MWp solar power plant, is a key enabler of our net-zero journey and aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. This project underscores our dedication to operational excellence, decarbonization and energy diversification — driving sustainability while creating lasting environmental and economic benefits. We are proud to partner with Emerge and SEWA and look forward to expanding our role in advancing clean energy solutions across the emirate.”

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said: “This landmark project with SNOC and Emerge shows the power of partnership in accelerating the energy transformation. As the first utility-scale solar PV plant in Sharjah and the first to power an oil and gas facility in the emirate with clean energy, this demonstrates our continuing commitment of supporting the UAE’s net-zero ambitions by enabling innovative, scalable solutions that drive sustainable growth.”

Luc Koechlin, CEO Middle East of EDF Group “The 60 MW solar power plant commissioned at SNOC’s premises reflects Emerge’s—and its shareholders’—strong commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable energy solutions that actively support the decarbonization of SNOC’s operations. As a shareholder of Emerge, this project aligns with EDF’s commitment to driving the energy transition of the Northern Emirates through innovative, low-carbon infrastructure.”

Emerge, being responsible for the entire project lifecycle under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) agreement, has successfully managed financing, design, procurement, and construction of the project. Moving forward, Emerge will oversee the operation and maintenance of the solar plant for the next 25 years.
